How Palworld made me a better Engineer

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, I’m sure that you’ve heard of the videogame that has taken over the real world and filled it with gun-toting colorful monsters. Palworld has been a sensation from day one and doesn’t show signs of slowing. One night while playing I came to a realization that changed everything I thought I knew about being a Software Engineer. I want to share with you what I learned.

If you haven’t heard of Palworld, think Pokemon, Fortnite, and Ark Survival Evolved wrapped in one.

Don’t be an inventor

You don’t have to create a ‘never heard of’ concept for your applications. Previously I had it made up in my mind that I had to invent something in order to provide value in the software space. Now before you put on your black ski mask and procure someone else's whole code base, I’m not saying that you should steal someone’s idea, I am saying that you should borrow what works. Use open source resources, use established libraries when possible, don’t reinvent the wheel- unless you have to.

Practice in public

There’s an old adage that, “If it were left up to engineers, not a single thing would ever be sent to production.” Inherently, engineers can be perfectionists — we never feel our projects are ‘ready’. Don’t get caught in that…
